Yuhaen - Week 9: The Power of Conversation
The video “I Became Friends With The Most Racist Man in America” by the famous Youtuber Jidion, was a powerful, wholesome, and natural account of how conversations between people with differing views on race can bridge ideological divides.
In this video, this Youtuber visits “the most racist town in America,” Harrison, Arkansas. It is widely considered the most racist town due to the leader of the KKK (Ku Klux Klan) residing there. In his previous visit to this town, Jidion realized that everyone was nothing but kind to him, even certain members of the KKK, despite him being a man of color. In this video, he hoped to visit a “friend” of his from the KKK—Tom. Other Youtubers have also visited him in the past because of his far right-wing and racist remarks, which help the videos gain virality. Jidion’s intentions, however, were to simply talk with him about his views of life and have him attend an award ceremony that the mayor of Harrison put together for Jidion.
Throughout the video Jidion engages in deep conversation with Tom, the two discussing their different viewpoints on people and life. It is apparent that Tom prefers the white community over other communities, while Jidion does not make that distinction between race. After each discussing their own views, they come to a consensus on what they both believe in. Tom puts it beautifully: “What keeps me going in this world is if I can make someone smile, I could help someone have a better day…they’re not going to need my help in Heaven or a paradise, but while we in this craphole, we need each other.” At this point Jidion realizes that Tom truly has a golden heart. He may hold biases and prejudices, but behind it all, he is an honest, community-driven person.
During his award ceremony, Jidion stated, “two different viewpoints colliding is enough to start a conversation.” He emphasized that “when you stop having a conversation, that’s when the real chaos happens.” This video reveals that it only takes an honest and natural conversation to uncover the shared humanity that connects us all.
Hello Yuhaendan. The topic of your Blog was quite interesting, as you mentioned a famous Youtuber who is known for pulling funny stunts, trolling individuals, and creating content that appeals to the general public. The way you used that to talk about a serious topic really amazed me as well. I believe that communication is essential, and that it can be a deciding factor for a multitude of diverse things. Holding a neutral stance when communicating on a serious topic can be hard to do, but it sure is definitely worth it. Humans should converse with one another on a daily basis, and I believe holding even one conversation with a loved one every single day significantly improves quality of life as well. You never know, a conversation with another individual can turn out to be better than expected, and if it does not go the way as planned, at least one can get experience from the given situation.
ReplyDeleteHi Yuhaen! I like how unique your topic is for your blog. I have never really watched Jidion’s video however I know a youtuber who did something very similar(not even similar they basically did the same thing). While reading your blog, I was reminded of Niko from Beta Squad, who went to the most racist town in America. He met up with a KKK leader, who is a devoted Christian, and Niko told him that he was a BBC news reporter(he is not) and interviewed him. I think it is beautiful how they were able to sit down with each other and talk with each other even when their views on life are so different. It is so interesting how Tom, although racist, hopes to brighten people's day and look out for people.
ReplyDeleteHi Yuhaen, I really enjoyed reading your blog because I think the power of conversation, or even communication in general, is something society as a whole could benefit from being a little more aware of. I agree with a lot of your ideas from your interpretation of the YouTube video you watched; I also think it’s possible for any group of people to find common ground in their beliefs when they really go in-depth with each other in conversation. I definitely agree with your point that interesting conversations can a lot of times stem from differences between the conversationalists, as I recall many times I’ve felt like I had fun talking about things with others where we had a lot of disagreements to discuss. The way you organized your blog as somewhat of an analytical summary of the video was really cool, and I appreciate how you maintained a fairly objective standpoint when telling us your interpretation of it. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYuhaen, your blog about Jidion’s video really struck a chord with me. It’s incredible how something as simple as a conversation can challenge deeply rooted beliefs and reveal the humanity in someone we might see as completely different from us. The way you described Tom’s realization about the importance of helping others, regardless of race, reminded me of how powerful empathy can be. It’s so easy to judge someone based on their labels or affiliations, but Jidion’s approach shows that listening and understanding can break down even the toughest walls.
ReplyDeleteYour reflection also made me think about how often people avoid these tough conversations out of fear or discomfort. Jidion’s bravery in talking to someone like Tom is such an inspiring example of what can happen when we step out of our comfort zones. I’ve had moments where I avoided talking to someone because I assumed we wouldn’t agree, but this blog makes me want to take a different approach. You captured the essence of the video beautifully, and it’s a reminder that open dialogue is a step toward making the world a better, more connected place.
